CO2 equivalent (CO2e) is a unit that takes into account carbon dioxide (CO2) as well as other gases that are harmful to the climate, such as methane or nitrous oxide. Agricultural animal husbandry is responsible for about a quarter of all greenhouse gases and thus also for progressive global warming. With a vegan diet, we can therefore drastically reduce our CO2e footprint.
Background on forest area savings
Agricultural animal husbandry consumes about 30% of our planet’s total land mass. However, with an exclusively vegan diet, 24% of the total mass would no longer be used. On this area, up to 800 billion trees could grow back organically, which would bind 230 gigatons of CO2 and thus cool the planet.
